Joanne McCourt: My OSS Story

Published by on Friday, 04 Nov 2016

Joanne was a delegate on the Academy 2016 programme. Read her story here:

After returning from the Academy programme I realised one of my main objectives which was to be clear on what direction I wanted to take my career, I discussed this with my line manager and now have a solid development plan in place. Since attending I have also passed my final ACCA exam and I'm now a fully qualified accountant and have taken on a number of projects to raise my profile.

Thinking about the bigger picture and the complexities of other roles within New Look and how they all fit together, the Academy gave me a greater understanding of the business I am a part of - I feel much more driven to achieve my aspirations. I feel determined and know that if you want something and work hard you can achieve it. I’m lucky to work with a company that encourages progression and has lots of opportunities inside and outside of my department I now have a mentor and regular meetings with our HR Business Partner to support my development plan.

I now understand the importance of on-going training and having a personal plan in terms of your career as opposed to it just being a task. This doesn’t mean the plan can’t change as mine is certainly flexible, but it feels really great to have a clear direction.
